The actual story is different from town to town, but the foundation was apparently laid by Bernal Díaz del Castillo, a Spanish chronicler (from when Spain colonised Mexico). There was an indigenous woman who had an affair with a very important Spanish soldier, with whom she even had 2 kids. When she asked him to have a formal marriage, he simply mocked her.
